Holtville Unified School District is located in Holtville, California. Holtville has a population of approximately 6,500 and is located in an irrigated, agricultural area of the desert seventeen miles north of the Mexican border and one hundred twenty-five miles east of San Diego. The district serves approximately 1779 students (2007 CBEDS). Five schools constitute the district. Holtville High School is a conventional high school with an enrollment of 589 students. Sam Webb High School is an alternative high school with a current enrollment count of 16 students. Holtville Middle School is comprised of 340 students in grades 6-8. Finley Elementary, serving students in grades K-5, is the largest school in the district with a student count of 632 students. The final school in the district, Pine Elementary, is located seven miles in the country and has 202 students in grades K-8.
With such close proximity to Mexico, the district has a large Hispanic population. Eighty-one percent of the students in the district are classified as Hispanic. Eighteen percent are white, not of Hispanic origin, and the remaining one percent are either Pacific Islander, Filipino, or African American. According to the Spring 2008 R-30 Language Census, thirty-eight percent of the students in the district were listed as English Learners. Our reclassification rate and CELDT results indicate that our English Learners are acquiring English skills at an acceptable rate, but assessment data in content areas indicate that our English Learners are not performing at the same levels as our English Only students.
All of the schools in the district are Title I schoolwide except Sam Webb High School. Our county has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state, sometimes close to 30%. As a result, our poverty level is 68% district-wide. Currently, Holtville Unified School District is identified as Provision 2 district and all students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
